In case anybody else has this - date and time were set properly, works fine in firefox, tried disabling the toolbar, sidebar, pretty much any good addon from IE8, also disabled all the google labs stuff through firefox.

unchecking "Protected Mode" under Security settings in IE fixed it. Setting them back doesn't seem to have any negative effect. Hope this helps.
